Traffic Control Signs and Devices

Traffic control signs and devices are required to be used by Section 18.5 of the Regulations to the Workers' Compensation Act. What exactly these are and how they are to be used is set out in various publications.

The Motor Vehicle Act in its regulations sets out certain signs to be used but does not number them in any coherent manner.

The Ministry of Transportation and Highways publishes the Traffic Control Manual for Work on Roadways which is the basic guide to traffic control in the province and forms the basis of training for all TCP's. It lists a large number of traffic signs and describes their use.

It also publishes the Manual of Standard Traffic Signs and Pavement Markings which also lists traffic signs by number. There is a large overlap between these two publications but the signs they include are not exactly the same.

These various signs are included here for reference listed by the publication in which they appear:

     Motor Vehicle Act

Traffic Control Manual for Work on Roadways

Manual of Standard Traffic Signs and Pavement Markings

If you are looking for a particular sign, you can use the Sign Finder to go directly to a specific sign number.

How these are to be used is set out in detail in the Manual, but many of the setups and arrangements have grown by usage and custom. Experienced TCP's know from work on many job sites over the years what works and what does not to effect the smooth flow of traffic.
